Bulls Start National Championship Tourney Today

TOPEKA, KS – The Amarillo Bulls quest to win the Robertson Cup North American Hockey League National Championship begins today (Tuesday) when they take on the Michigan Warriors. Fa0ce-off for the opening game of the round-robin at Kansas Expo Center-Landon Arena is set for 4:05 pm.

It’s the second all-time meeting between the Bulls and the Warriors as they hooked up nine months ago in the first game of the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota. Amarillo collected a well-deserved 4-3 victory.

The Bulls captured the South Division crown last Monday night with a 3-1 victory over the RoadRunners in Topeka. It was Amarillo’s fifth win in Topeka this season. The Michigan Warriors needed five games to beat St. Louis to take the North Division title, and then had to play two more games against the Bismarck Bobcats to get to the tournament. The Warriors beat Bismarck in both games of their play-in series including 6-5 in double overtime.

One of the big match-ups will be the goaltenders, Nikifor Szczerba of the Bulls and Robert Tadazak of the Warriors, who have been among the best during the regular season in several different categories.

The format for the Robertson Cup is a single round-robin with the top team getting a bye into the Championship game on Saturday night. The second and third seeds will play in a semi-final game on Friday. This tournament format is similar the NAHL playoffs as there will be sudden death overtime should the teams be tied after regulation.

Fans can tune into the game live on ESPN1440 and www.amarillobulls.com, beginning with a special edition of Prelude To The Playoffs at the Robertson Cup presented by Wayland Baptist University at 3:30 pm. Denis J. Puska brings you the exciting play-by-play action at 4:05 pm. The game is also available on Pay-Per-View courtesy of Fast Hockey and a high speed internet connection is required in order to view the game.
