Bulls Score Late To Edge Wildcats

WICHITA FALLS, TX – The Amarillo Bulls opened up their exhibition schedule on a positive note on Friday night.

Ryan Stevens scored the game winning goal on the power play with 41 seconds remaining in regulation time to lift the Amarillo Bulls past the Wichita Falls Wildcats 2-1 on Friday night at Kay Yeager Coliseum. The victory evened the Bulls exhibition record all-time at 3-3 in four seasons in the North American Hockey League.

All of the scoring was completed in the final 10 minutes of the third period after the goaltending in the first 40 minutes kept the teams off the score sheet. Colin Delia of the Bulls and Chase Munroe of the Wildcats made some big saves to keep the game close. Oleg Potemkin gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead on a turnaround shot from the high slot area midway through the first period. The Wildcats tied the game two minutes later on a short-handed marker.

That set the stage for the Bulls special teams to take over in the final two minutes and it was Stevens who stole the loose puck and fired it low past goaltender Chase Munroe.

“What our new guys need to learn is that Wichita Falls is a good team and they battled us hard,” said Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams. “When those players come from various junior teams or midget hockey teams to play is that it takes a different mentality to play in the South Division. I told the guys that we have a lot to learn off of it. However, the bottom line is that we got the win and they should feel good about it. Even though we didn’t execute the game plan or played as well as we wanted, but we worked hard for two weeks to get to this point.”

Williams said the line-up will change tomorrow night and he will be getting some of the veterans in to play.

“We left out a handful of veterans like Mike Davis our leading goal scorer, Omar Mullan who polices the game well, scores big goals and brings an element to the game that we need,” Williams said. “We didn’t have Brady Ferguson who is a big playmaker or Joe Grabowski who plays well defensively and Brett Szayner.”
