Bulls Remain Undefeated At Home After 5-0 win over New Mexico

AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls have been a dominating team on home ice this season. Their exceptional play at the Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center continued on Saturday as the Bulls blanked the New Mexico Mustangs 5-0 for their fourth straight win.

The back-to-back victories over the Mustangs over the weekend vaulted the Bulls into a tie for first place in the South Division with the Wichita Falls Wildcats. However, the Bulls begin a difficult part of their schedule with games against the Texas Tornado and the Topeka Road Runners.

In Saturday’s game, goaltender Nikifor Szczerba turned aside all 20 shots he faced and the Bulls played outstanding defense in front of him. The contest also featured a line brawl in third period that saw several players get ejected.

It was a tight 2-0 game going into the third when Matt Johnson widened the gap, scoring on a great feed from Taylor Ward and Dan Sherer. However, the Bulls weren’t done as they added two more goals in the final seven minutes. Cody Freeman finished off a play from Michael Erickson and Zack Smoot. Dan Sherer rounded out the scoring with just under two minutes remaining from TJ Sarcona and Matt Johnson.

The first period of play didn’t resemble the wide-open, seven-goal outburst of Friday night. There was actually just one goal scored and it came just 1:25 into the game. Terrance Johnson gobbled up a loose puck in the goal crease area and stuffed it in the net at the 1:25 mark. Joe Kozlak and Chris Cass earned assists on the goal. The Bulls outshot New Mexico 14-7 in the first period. New Mexico had their best scoring chance when they rang a shot off the cross bar.

The Amarillo Bulls took a 2-0 lead in the second period when Chris Cass shot the puck through the legs of goaltender Bryan Jones. Mitch Rogge earned an assist on the marker.  Amarillo outshot New Mexico 14-5 in the second. Mustangs’ goaltender Bryan Jones did his best to keep his team in the game turning aside great chances by the Bulls.

There were total of 15 power plays in the game and no goals. The teams combined for 158 minutes in penalties with most of that coming in the third period. Amarillo outshot New Mexico 39-20.

The Amarillo Bulls return to action next weekend with back to back games against the Texas Tornado. On Friday the two teams square off at the Dr. Pepper Star Center at 7:30 pm. Fans can hear the game live on ESPN1440 beginning with the Wayland Baptist University Warm Up Show at 7:15 pm.

On Saturday night the two teams will battle in the Amarillo Civic Center at 7 pm. Tickets are available at all Panhandle Ticket Outlets including United Supermarkets or on line at www.amarillobulls.com. Flex Packs, Group Tickets and Single Game tickets are also available by calling the Bulls office at 806-242-1122.
