AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls gave themselves a big present on Friday just prior to the Christmas Break.
Cody Freeman fired the game winning goal via the power play in the third period to lift the Bulls to a 1-0 victory over the first place Texas Tornado at The Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. It was the Bulls 19thwin of the season and it pulled them to within one point of first place in the South Division.
The game had a playoff atmosphere and intensity as fans witnessed a battle of two of the top teams in the North American Hockey League. The Bulls fired 43 shots on goal, including 17 in the second period and 15 in the third. Texas goaltender Jimmy Kruger was outstanding in goal and kept his team in the contest with some big stops. Goaltender Nikifor Szczerba posted the shutout, turning aside all 30 shots he faced. Some of the more important saves came in the final period of play.
Freeman’s goal was scored on a great feed from Chris Cass at the 12:01 mark. Dan McDougal also earned an assist on the goal.
The first two periods featured no goals but plenty of end-to-end action. Both teams generated lots of scoring chances. There was a fight in the opening period with each of the team’s top heavyweights went toe-to-toe as Colton Warner of the Bulls fought Michael Zagari.
Texas which has one of the top power plays in the league finished 0 for 5, while the Bulls were 1 for 7.
The Bulls could either be one two or three points back of first place depending on the outcome of Saturday night’s game between the Tornado and the Corpus Christi Ice Rays.
