Bulls Main Camp Faces Off This Week

AMARILLO, TX – One of the sure signs that hockey season is drawing closer is set to start tomorrow. That’s when the defending South Division champions Amarillo Bulls host their Main Selection Camp in Glen Ellyn, Illinois to pick their 2011-2012 roster.

The camp kicks off a busy week that includes the selection of the roster, which will be announced on Sunday. Three goalie sessions begin tomorrow morning and conclude Thursday, followed by the main selection camp check-in. There are a number of practices, and two all-star games leading up to the selection of the roster.

The group will include returning players, those chosen in the NAHL Entry Draft and others who were invited. Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams says he’s excited to head to Illinois to see the returning players and the new players trying to make the team.

“There are a lot of spots open for us right now,” Williams said. “That’s what the week is all about. To watch and grade players to see if they are a good fit for our hockey team. One of the things we look for is not only their hockey skills, but their character and off-ice commitment to get better.”

One of the main areas that separated the Bulls from the teams in the South Division last season was their endurance and competitive edge which took over late in games. The high fitness level led to many late game heroics and exciting victories.  Williams said the coaching staff has been keeping track of the players throughout the off-season to see how their workouts have been progressing.

“We can be physically in shape, and the mental side will come along. We won’t get as mentally tired and make mistakes,” he said. “I know the guys have been working out hard, and I have been keeping track of how they’ve been doing. I know they’re excited to get back and we’re also excited. It’s been a nice little break, but I get pretty pumped up when we get closer to the season.”
