BRIGHTON, MI – The new Amarillo Bulls Coaching Staff was all smiles on Friday night following the completion of Day 1 of Main Camp in Brighton, Michigan.
Head Coach Jon Rogger and Assistant Coach Mike Watt watched players that competed in games throughout the two sessions. There will be another series of games tomorrow before the players are cut down to approximately 40 that will participate in All-Star Games on Saturday. Rogger said it is a short camp with everyone getting an opportunity to play in four games.
“Our goaltenders and defense looked quite strong in the games that were played in Day One,” said Rogger. “But everyone is working hard and competing and they know what it is going to take to play in Amarillo.”
Rogger said over the next few days there will be some tough decisions that will be made by the coaching staff.
“These players that are here have invested a lot of time, energy and money to come to this camp so we want to do our best to make sure we have made the right decisions,” he explained. “Sometimes as a coach it’s tough to cut players but its part of the business and they understand that. At the end of the day the players know that they are the ones in control of what happens.”
The Main Camp is the first opportunity for Jon Rogger and new Assistant Mike Watt to work together since they became part of the Bulls organization during the summer. Rogger said they are working well together.
“Mike knows what he is looking for,” Rogger said. “A kid would make a nice play and he gave me that look that we need to keep watching him. Mike has been a fun guy to be around and we both seem to like the same type of players so I couldn’t be happier thus far.”
Once the Main Camp has concluded, those players that have secured spots on the Bulls roster will head to the Texas Panhandle later in August to prepare for Training Camp and the start of the 2014-15 season and the North American Hockey League Showcase in September.
