AMARILLO, TX — The Amarillo Bulls are collected their second come-from-behind win in a row on Friday night.
Four goals in the third period including two less than a minute apart lifted the Bulls to a 5-3 win over the Wichita Falls Wildcats in the Bull Pen at the Amarillo Civic Center. The win was the Bulls 10th of the season and put them into sole possession of first place in the North American Hockey League’s South Division.
Amarillo trailed 2-1 entering the third period took the lead with two goals 59 seconds apart. First Joe Kozlak redirected the puck into the net from Terrance Johnson at 2:57, and then Cody Freeman connected from Zack Smoot and Derek Hills.
After the Wildcats tied the game 3-3, the Bulls regained the lead for good when Dan Sherer finished off a great feed from Mitch Rogge at 10:49. Matt Johnson added an insurance marker at 16:13 from Michael Erickson to make the comeback complete at 5-3.
It was a scoreless first 20 minutes of hockey as the Bulls outshot the Wildcats 13-5 but couldn’t solve goaltender Tyler Green. Wichita Falls grabbed a 2-0 lead before the second period was 11 minutes old on two power play goals.
However, as they did in their first come-from-behind win, the Bulls scored near the end of the second period to cut the deficit to one goal. Luke Jenkins fired a slap shot by the goaltender Green from TJ Sarcona off the faceoff 13:44.
One of the stories in the game was specialty teams as the Bulls power play continued to have difficulty with no goals in 9 opportunities. The Wildcats netted two goals on five attempts.
Amarillo outshot Wichita Falls 41-32 including 16-13 in the final 20 minutes.
The Amarillo Bulls have the remainder of the weekend off before returning to play next Saturday, Oct. 30 when they travel to New Mexico to face the Mustangs at 8:30 pm Central Time, 7:30 pm Mountain Time.
