AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls Inaugural home opener was a huge success.
Terrance Johnson scored the lone goal in the shootout and Nikifor Szczerba stopped all 42 shots as the Bulls blanked the Texas Tornado 1-0 in front of 1,543 fans in The Bull Pen at the Amarillo Civic Center.
The fans were treated to everything that the North American Hockey League had to offer from exciting end-to-end action, big body checks and two fights.
Goaltender Szczerba and his counterpart Jake Stafford of Texas were outstanding in net making some huge saves to keep the teams off of the score sheet.
Bulls forward Cody Freeman had the best chance to score in Overtime when he fired a shot off the goalpost.
In the shootout, Terrance Johnson wired a shot through the legs of Stafford, and that stood up as the only one that would find the back of the net.
Tonight’s Inaugural home opener also featured pre-game ceremonies as the players were introduced with a special music package. Fans scooped up the Inaugural game souvenir pucks that were handed out at the door.
It didn’t take long for the Amarillo Bulls and the Texas Tornado to get at one another during the game. They played spirited hockey through the first 20 minutes. There was one fight between Cody Freeman of the Bulls and Mico Solorzano. The Texas Tornado outshot the Bulls 11-9 in the first period.
The second period was much like the first with no goals, but plenty of chances by both teams. There was also another fight between Bulls forward Shawn Serapilia and Mike Fleming. The Bulls outshot the Tornado 14-11 in the second period.
There were a total of seven power plays in the game, with Texas going 0-4 and Amarillo was 0 for 3.
The Amarillo Bulls look to make it four wins in a row tomorrow (Saturday) night when they travel to Wichita Falls to face the Wildcats at 7 pm.
