Bulls Hold Off Topeka 5-3

TOPEKA, KS – The Amarillo Bulls exploded for four first period goals and held off the rival Topeka RoadRunners 5-3 on Friday night at Kansas Expo Center Landon Arena. The victory extended the Bulls point collection streak to five games (4-0-1) and helped them to remain tied for first place in the South Division.

Forward IMG_2302George Mika had another strong game for the Bulls with a goal and three assists. Other marksmen for Amarillo were Jeff Solow, Steven Ipri, Kosta Likourezos and Jake Nitsche. Nikita Babintsev posted the win in goal stopping 28 of 31 shots he faced.

It didn’t take the Amarillo Bulls long to get the offense rolling as George Mika connected on the power play at the 4:47 mark from Steven Ipri and Kosta Likourezos. Eight minutes later, the RoadRunners scored two goals in a span of 2:09 to take a 2-1 lead. The first goal by Matt Barnes trickled through the legs of Babintsev. The second goal by Andrew Hart went off the stick of Tyler Hall and into the Bulls net. After that it was all Amarillo with three goals in three minutes to make it 4-2 and push out starting Topeka goaltender Mike Rockwell. Jeff Solow scored on a power play goal with a blast from the point at 15:48 from Steve Ipri and George Mika. Ipri scored on a breakaway on a great feed from Hayden Broomhead and Jeff Solow. In the final two minutes, Kosta Likourezos got his eight of the season from George Mika and Brendan Walkom. The Bulls outshot Topeka 16-15 in the first period.

Jakob Nitsche extended Amarillo’s lead to 5-2 when he scored a shorthanded goal from George Mika at 9:39. The RoadRunners cut the Bulls lead to just two goals when Alex Frey scored on a back door play at the side of the net. Amarillo had the shots advantage through 40 minutes at 31-26.

Third period was a track meet with both teams skating well. The game also got chippy with several power plays for either team.

The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Topeka RoadRunners 38-33. There were a combined 13 power plays between the two teams with the Bulls going 2-7 and Topeka had no goals on six opportunities.

The weekend series featuring the Bulls and the RoadRunners concludes tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7:15 pm at Kansas Expo Center Landon Arena. Fans can tune into the action beginning with the Wayland Baptist University Warm Up Show at 6:50 pm.

Hockey is back at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center on Friday, Oct. 14, Saturday, Oct. 15 and Sunday, Oct. 16 when the Bulls host the Lone Star Brahmas.
