AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls, proud members of the North American Hockey League announced the hiring of Rocky Russo as the team’s first Assistant Coach.
Russo, a native of Youngstown, Ohio spent last season as Assistant coach and Director of Scouting for the St. Louis Bandits of the NAHL. Prior to that Russo spent four seasons as an assistant coach for the Mahoning Valley Phantoms of the NAHL. His duties for the Phantoms included video analysis and other coaching responsibilities. During his time in Mahoning Valley, they participated in four NAHL National Championship tournaments; finishing second in 2007 and 2008.
“I am very excited to be a part of the Amarillo Bulls organization,” said Russo. “Working with a Coach like Dennis Williams is a great opportunity. His experience at the NCAA level will be a fantastic asset for our organization.
“The ownership group is committed to success and that is a great thing to be a part of. I couldn’t be happier to be joining such a professional organization.”
Bulls Head Coach/Director of Hockey Operations Dennis Williams said Rocky brings a great deal of knowledge of the NAHL and excels in recruiting high end hockey players.
"I would like to welcome Rocky to the Amarillo organization and community,” he said. “Rocky was exactly what we were looking for. His familiarity with the league, recruiting of players and hockey knowledge will be an instant impact within the Amarillo Bulls culture."
Russo's coaching experience also includes being the Head Coach and General Manager of the Youngstown State University hockey team. During his four seasons with Youngstown State, he guided them to a CHA championship in 2005, and was instrumental in their move from Division III to Division I.
Russo graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Management from Kent State University in 2005. He was a four year member of their hockey team, and played in three ACHA Division I National Tournaments during his time there.
The Inaugural season of the Amarillo Bulls in the North American Hockey League is fast approaching. The Bulls home opener is set for Friday, September 24 when they host the Texas Tornado at the Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
