TROY, MICHIGAN – It was a big day for Amarillo Bulls players at the North American Hockey League’s Top Prospects Tournament in Troy, Michigan on Tuesday.
Bulls players figured in four of the five goals, as the South blanked the Midwest 5-0. The victory helped the South even their record at 1-1. The tournament wraps up tomorrow (Wednesday) morning when the South takes on the West.
The difference in the game was the second period when the South scored three times, including two less than three minutes apart. John Rey and Tyler Deresky set up the first South Division goal just four minutes into the second period. TJ Sarcona extended the lead to 2-0 when he scored at the 10:53 mark. The South would add more goal before the period would end.
In the third period defenseman, Geoff Fortman set up the fourth South goal in the final five minutes. The South Division would add one more tally with less than three minutes remaining.
Bulls goaltender Gregg Gruehl played the second half of the game, and turned aside all 16 shots he faced to share in the shutout.
The South Division began the tournament by falling 7-4 to the Central Division on Monday afternoon. Gregg Gruehl played the first half of the game for the South Division and stopped 9 of 10 shots he faced.
Bulls forward Jude Warner has been getting into offensive attack for the NAHL 18-Under Selects at the tournament. On Monday, Warner added an assist on the first goal of the game as the Selects squad beat the West 4-3.
On Tuesday, Warner scored the lone goal in the Selects 2-1 setback to the Central Division. The Selects close out the tournament against the Midwest team on Wednesday.
Hockey is back at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center on Friday and Saturday as the Amarillo Bulls entertain the Texas Tornado. Both games face off at 7 pm.
On Friday it’s Guaranteed Win and Scout Night presented by Aqua One. The Bulls will wear their specialty jerseys on Saturday night and a live auction will be held immediately after the game with proceeds to benefit Special Olympics.
