AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls collected their first point since late November, following a 2-1 shootout loss to the Wichita Falls Wildcats on Saturday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
That setback extended the Bulls string without a win to seven, but it gave them a cushion of three points over third place Topeka RoadRunners and the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. The Wichita Falls Wildcats lead the division by also three points as they notched their first four point weekend ever in the Texas Panhandle.
Paul Berrafato stopped 33 of 34 shots he faced, and surrendered just the lone goal in regulation in the middle stanza. Goaltender David Zevnik had another solid outing versus the Bulls stopping 28 of 29 shots he faced.
It was a slow start to the game by both teams. But at the 19:07 mark of the first period it rained Teddy Bears and Stuffed Animals for the Toys For Tots Program. Roman Ammirato scored even strength from Mike Davis. Wichita Falls outshot Amarillo 6-5.
In the second period the Bulls turned up the shot production with 15 sent on goaltender Zevnik. The Wildcats tied the game with a controversial shorthanded goal, their second of the weekend, and 10th of the year.
There was no scoring in the third period, and the Wildcats enjoyed the shot edged 11-9. Overtime produced a grand total of eight shots between the two teams but no goals by either team.
The difference in the shootout was the Wildcats ability to convert on their first four attempts, while the Bulls were only able to get goals from Tyler Gernhofer and Brady Ferguson.
There were just six total power plays in the game with each team having three.
The Amarillo Bulls outshot the Wichita Falls Wildcats 34-30.
It’s off to the Christmas Break for the Amarillo Bulls with their next game Sonic Sunday, Dec. 29 at 6 pm versus the Lone Star Brahmas.
