CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The Amarillo Bulls put up a resilient effort against the Corpus Christi IceRays on Friday night but it wasn’t enough in a 3-2 loss at American Bank Center. The defeat extended the Bulls winless streak to six games (0-5-1). The two teams will close out their weekend series tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7:05 pm.
Joey Molinaro and Joey DiBenedetto fired goals for the Bulls in the opening period, while Anton Martinson took the loss in goal his first against the IceRays in six career starts against them. The Bulls entered the game short staffed as several forwards missed the contest due to injury. Two defensemen were moved up to forward and they accounted themselves well. Despite trailing early in the game, the Bulls pushed the pace for most of the night and deserved a better fate than the score would indicate.
The game didn’t start well for the Bulls as the IceRays scored twice in the first four minutes of the game. The first goal was on a shot in close, while the second one was a tip at the side of the net. However, the Bulls took over the play after that and went to work to tie the game. Joey Molinaro’s shot along the boards went off a defenseman’s skate and in-behind goaltender Graham Hunt to make it 2-1. Brendan Murphy earned an assist on the play. Three minutes later, it was Captain Joey DiBenedetto who fired a shot passed Hunt thanks to perfect passing from Michael Forman and Jake Houston.
Corpus Christi outshot the Bulls by a slight 10-9 margin in the opening stanza.
A quick start by the home side led to what proved to be the eventual game winning tally. A screen shot from the point eluded goaltender Anton Martinsson after the Bulls failed to clear the puck out. After that it was all Amarillo as the club played one of its best 2nd period of the season controlling much of the action. Johan Lundgren had the best opportunity when he slid a puck through the goal crease and just wide of the far post.
It was all Amarillo in the final 20 minutes as the team worked hard looking for the equalizer. Several attempts were stopped by goaltender Hunt including some quality chances in the final five minutes. The Bulls outshot the IceRays 9-3 in the third period.
Each team had 24 shots apiece on goal. There were just three power plays between the two teams with nobody able to score.
