Bulls Edge Odessa 5-4 In Overtime To Close Pre-Season

AMARILLO, TX – The pre-season finale between the Amarillo Bulls and the Odessa Jackalopes gave fans plenty of offense on Saturday afternoon at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.

The Bulls raced out to a 4-1 only to see Odessa rally to tie the contest at 4-4 and force extra time. It took a goal by Bulls tendered player Jason Brancheau to lift the home side to a 5-4 triumph and sweep the set.

Connor Witherspoon continued his hot hand scoring twice in the opening period, while Jon Russell and Martin Trudman had the others. Joe Giocobbo and Liam Souliere split the work in goal. Souliere went in during the 2nd half of the game and surrendered just one marker to post the win.

It didn’t take long for the Bulls to get their offense rolling as Connor Witherspoon scored two goals in the first eight minutes of the game. Jordan Venagoni, Quinn Warmuth and Jason Brancheau picked up the assists. Just before the end of the stanza, Jon Russell potted a goal on his former team from Steve Rex to make it 3-0. The Jackalopes added a goal just over a minute later from Lucas Anderson to cut the deficit to 3-1.

In the second period, Martin Trudman wired a shot past the goaltender to restore Amarillo’s three goal lead but after that it was all visitors as Eric Huss and Matteo Menotti scored to cut shrink the score to 4-3.

The Jackalopes tied the game to start the third period on a goal from Peyton Frantti who was able to put the puck in the top shelf.

There was no scoring in the remainder of regulation time, but it overtime the Bulls won a key face-off in the offensive zone and Jason Brancheau was able to steal the puck away and slide it past the goaltender to win the game.

The Amarillo Bulls were outshot by the Odessa Jackalopes 27-22 in the contest. Neither team was able to score on their power play opportunities.

Next up for the Amarillo Bulls will be their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 pm versus the same Odessa Jackalopes at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
