BLAINE, MN – The Amarillo Bulls concluded the North American Hockey League Showcase on a positive note Saturday afternoon. The Bulls posted their second win of the season edging the Springfield Jr. Blues 3-2 at the Schwann Super Rink. It’s the Bulls 11th all-time win at the Showcase and second against Springfield.
Charlie Combs, Mitchell Vandeburg and Brady Crabtree recorded goals for Amarillo, while Jacob Weatherly earned the win in goal. The Bulls played a much spirited game pushing the pace against the Blues. Weatherly was again the difference in goal turning aside 30 of 32 shots he faced.
The Amarillo Bulls and the Springfield Jr. Blues played a spirited opening 20 minutes of hockey. Both teams with scoring chances but were turned aside by the goaltenders Jacob Weatherly and Jeremy Wik. The Bulls played a much stronger opening stanza but unable to score that 1st first period goal of the season. Springfield outshot Amarillo 7-6 in the first period.
It was a great second period for the Bulls again outscoring Springfield 2-1. Charlie Coombs scored his third of the season finishing off a pass from Mitchell Vandeburg at the 2:!9 mark. Later in the stanza Springfield tied the game on a power play goal. The Bulls regained the lead for good when Vandeburg scored on a scramble in front of the net from Connor Wood and Adem Arifi with just 55 seconds remaining. Springfield outshot Amarillo 14-7 in the second period.
It was a wide open final 20 minutes that the Bulls were able to use to their advantage and extend their advantage to two goals. Forward Brady Crabtree scored on a one timer from Adem Arifi and Paul Vella at 9:34. The Blues kept pushing trying to climb back into the contest and used a power play with their goaltender pulled in the final 75 seconds to close the gap to 3-2. Amarillo’s defensive prowess was able to keep the Blues from tying the contest.
The Bulls were 0 for 2 on the powerplay, while the Blues were 2 for 6. Springfield also held the shot advantage 32-19
In just six days the Amarillo Bulls will face off their 5th home opener against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 pm at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. The two teams will meet again on the Saturday night. There are many activities planned for both games including a banner raising ceremony on the Friday.
