Bulls Drop Late Decision To Mudbugs 3-2

IMG_5708AMARILLO, TX – The Amarillo Bulls saw their winless streak stretch to 10 games on Friday night at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center. The Shreveport Mudbugs scored the game winning goal on the power play in the final three minutes of regulation and held on for a 3-2 decision. It was the third straight game where the Bulls took a penalty late in the contest and where the team couldn’t prevent the opposition from finding a way to score.

Friday’s game was the first meeting of the season between the two teams. Amarillo and Shreveport had met in the past at the minor professional level and developed a long standing rivalry.

Eric Cooley, with his second goal in as many games, and Charlie Singerhouse scored in the tight checking affair for the Bulls. Nikita Babintsev took the loss in goal, stopping 35 of 38 shots he faced. Gueorgi Feduolov netted the game winner for Shreveport, while Cam Cook and Brendon Gysbers had the others. Forward Eric Zohovs assisted on all three goals. Dylan Lubbesmyer posted the win in goal stopping 35 of 37 shots that came his way.

The two teams traded goals midway through the first period. Eric Cooley notched his second goal in as many games when he tipped home a one-timer from defenseman Bray Crowder. Hayden Broomhead provided an assist on the play. Just under three minutes later, the Mudbugs pulled even when Brendon Gysbers scored on a hard shot from just inside the blue line on the power play that beat goaltender Nikita Babintsev over the glove side.  Amarillo outshot Shreveport 11-9 in the first period.

There was no scoring in the second period, as both teams continued to push ahead. The Bulls controlled much of the first 10 minutes with back-to-back power plays but unable to get the puck across the goal line. Shreveport attacked the home side later in the stanza but was thwarted by the Bulls goaltender. The Mudbugs outshot the Bulls 15-13 and the two sides were even going into the dressing room at 24 shots apiece.

Defenseman Bray Crowder gave the Bulls a great shot in the third period when he led a rush up the ice. Crowder’s shot went off the goaltender’s glove and hit the crossbar and stayed out. On the same play, Shreveport grabbed a 2-1 lead early in the third period when Cam Cook converted an odd man rush up the ice. Three minutes later the Bulls tied the game when Charlie Singerhouse scored on a one-timer from Brendan Walkom. Phil Fromberger started the play with a long stretch pass to Walkom who led the rush up the ice. The Bulls were penalized in the final three minutes of regulation and it didn’t take the visitors long to connect as Gueorgi Feduolov scored on a sharp-angled shot that beat Babintsev short side.

The Shreveport Mudbugs outshot the Amarillo bulls 14-13 in the third period and 38-37 overall.
