CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The Amarillo Bulls were unable to carry the momentum over from a big win into the next game at American Bank Center. A tough first period combined with some undisciplined penalties sent the Amarillo Bulls to a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Corpus Christi IceRays on Saturday, and fell 10 points back of the fourth and final playoff spot in the South Division.
Steven Rex and Brendan Datema scored for Amarillo in the third period while Jason Grande took the loss in goal. Angus Scott scored twice for the IceRays, while Adam Kadlec and Brendan Miller had the others in support of goaltender Chad Veltri.
The first five minutes of the game had the Bulls in retreat mode and then a short time later saw one of their captains Brendon Michaelian get dismissed from the contest for a five-minute slashing penalty. Three minutes after that the IceRays found the back of the net on a goal by Adam Kadlec who wired one past Jason Grande. The Bulls were outshot 14-8 in the first period.
There was no scoring in the second period as Bulls turned up their offensive play and goaltender Jason Grande came up with a couple of key stops to keep his team in touch.
The Bulls tied the game early in the third period as Stephen Rex scored from Brett Abdelnour and Austin O’Rourke on a great shot. Six minutes later, the IceRays regained the lead for good as Angus Scott converted a 3-2 on break up the ice thanks to a great pass from Jayson Dimizio. Amarillo pulled its goaltender in the final 90 seconds and surrendered a pair of empty net goals by Scott and Brendan Miller. The Bulls closed out the scoring in the final 16 seconds as Brendan Datema scored his first North American Hockey League goal.
The Amarillo Bulls were outshot 34-28 and finished with no power play goals on just four chances. The IceRays were 1 for 6.
It’s back on the road next weekend for the Amarillo Bulls as they visit the Topeka RoadRunners at Kansas Expo Center Landon Arena. Both games facing off at 7:05 pm. Hockey returns to the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center on Friday, Mar. 9 and Saturday, Mar. 10 when the Amarillo Bulls host the Corpus Christi IceRays at 7 pm. Friday is the Family Four Pack for $44 and the Bring A Bud Pack for $22. Saturday is Amarillo Youth Hockey Retro Night. The Bulls will wear special retro throw back jerseys with a live auction to follow immediately after the game.
