Bulls Cook Rays 5-2

AMARILLO, TX – Home cooking was just the recipe for the Amarillo Bulls on Friday night.

Two first period goals and another two in the third propelled the Bulls to a 5-2 win over the Corpus Christi IceRays. It was the Bulls first win in over a month and it snapped a nine game winless streak.

Rookie Nick Bohatiuk scored twice for the Bulls, while Brady Crabtree, George Mika and Michael Forman potted singles. Defenseman Riley DeFazio and forward Joey Molinaro each had a couple of helpers, while Anton Martinsson stopped 39 of 41 shots he faced for the win in goal.

It was a fast moving opening 20 minutes of hockey between the two rivals. The first eight minutes were played with very few whistles. The IceRays scored first goal on a power play chance at the side of the net. It was all Bulls in the final six minutes of the stanza and they were rewarded for their hard work. First, newcomer Nick Bohatiuk scored from Joey Molinaro and Jake Houston at 14:48. Bohatiuk was allowed to walk easily to the front of the net. The Bulls made it 2-1 when Brady Crabtree pushed the puck across the line from George Mika and Riley DeFazio. Amarillo outshot and outhustled the IceRays 15-11 in the first period.

The second period was back and forth but the Bulls found that separation they were needing. Nick Bohatiuk notched his second of the game with a great shot from Joey Molinaro and Phil Fromberger at 9:52. Goaltender Anton Martinson was solid in goal making all of the stops look easy and also getting plenty of help from his teammates. Each squad had 14 shots on goal in the period.

The early part of the third period was dominated by the Bulls before the IceRays came on and looked to make a comeback. George Mika quashed the Corpus Christi attempt when he tipped home a shot from Matt Nehls and Liam Ferguson at 11:31. Five minutes later, Michael Forman notched his first NAHL goal when he fired home a shot from Charlie Singerhouse and Riley De Fazio at 16:31. Corpus Christi closed out the scoring in the final minute of the game.

The Corpus Christi IceRays outshot the Amarillo Bulls 16-9 in the third period and 41-38 overall.
