AMARILLO, TX – The force was definitely not with the Amarillo Bulls on Star Wars Night on Friday at the Budweiser Bull Pen in the Amarillo Civic Center.
The Bulls saw their losing streak extended to six games after falling 5-0 to the Odessa Jackalopes in front of a crowd of better than 3,000. Many of the fans in attendance took time to enjoy the activities on the concourse including the various booths. The Bulls along with Hastings, and Yellow City Comic Con worked together to help raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network.
After a slow start to the first period in which it took the Bulls nearly 10 minutes to collect their first shot on goal, the team pushed forward and started to put pressure on goaltender Dean Shatzer. The Jackalopes raced out to a 2-0 lead first lead with a pair of markers 27 seconds apart in the final minute of the stanza. The first one was a turnover off the stick of defenseman Keenan Sabatini and the second was off a great pass from the corner as the team failed to clear the puck out of their own end. Odessa outshot Amarillo 20-10 in the period.
The Bulls best chance of the game took place in the second period on one of several power plays. The team worked the puck around the Odessa zone and Brady Crabtree’s shot went off both goal posts and stay out. The Jackalopes sandwiched two more goals around that scoring chance. The first goal went off the middle post of the net and came back out. The goal judge didn’t put the light when the puck crossed the line, but the referee was in the right place to make the call. The fourth goal was tallied on an odd man rush up the ice. Despite surrendering both of those markers, the Bulls had the shot advanced 15-11 in the second.
Amarillo continued to press forward in the third period looking to break the scoreless string. The power play was the Bulls best chance to get rolling. George Mika and Michael Forman both had shots denied by goaltender Dean Shatzer. The Jackalopes rounded out the scoring with a final goal in the last 18 seconds.
The teams combined for five power plays with the Bulls having to kill off just one penalty. The shots on goal favored the visiting Jackalopes 44-36.
The Amarillo Bulls close out a four game home stand tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7 pm when they host the Odessa Jackalopes. It’s Suddenlink night and there will be great prizes including free internet for a month given away. One lucky child could win a new bike from Seven Bar and Grill.
